Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the Urban Grower hanging hydroponic system.
How does the Urban Grower work?
The Urban Grower is a vertical hybrid hydroponics plant growing system designed to grow 16–24 plants at the same time. It’s unique in that it doesn’t require running water or electricity and is built to be space-saving, pest-resistant, low-maintenance, and cost-efficient. It uses coconut coir as a growth medium that generally uses 90% less water than traditional in the ground growing.
Just connect the cores and pots, hang the tower, fill with coconut coir and fertiliser. Then plant your seedlings, water regularly and watch them grow!

What can I grow in the Urban Grower?
You can grow almost anything in the Urban Grower. Above the ground plants like herbs (basil, parsley, mint, etc.), leafy greens such as lettuce and spinach, tomatoes, peppers, and even strawberries all grow well in the Urban Grower. The system holds up to 24 plants, giving you a constant supply of fresh food.
We recommend starting from seedlings rather than seeds to accelerate the time from planting to harvest. However seeds will grow perfectly fine in the Urban Grower but will require a longer time to sprout, grow and harvest.
Root vegetables like beetroot and radishes can also grow in the Urban Grower, however, we recommend deep root vegetables like carrots and potatoes to be grown in the ground or in containers under the Urban Grower to utilise any overflow water or fertiliser.
How much space does it need?
The Urban Grower takes up no floor space at all - it simply hangs vertically. It fits in the same space as a large houseplant but grows 24 times more plants.
Multiple kits can be hanged next to each other and greenhouses or stands could be made to order. Please reach out to us with any enquiries about greenhouse or stand options.
Do I need any gardening experience?
Not at all! The Urban Grower is designed for complete beginners. The hydroponic system does most of the work for you - just add water and fertiliser as indicated. We provide simple instructions to get you started, and most people see their first harvest within 4-6 weeks.
Where can I hang my Urban Grower?
The Urban Grower is ideal for small spaces such as balconies or small gardens. It can hang on any appropriate structure that can carry 20-30kg of weight such as walls, ceilings, balcony rails. A hanging basket bracket is an ideal structure for hanging your Urban Grower on.
On a larger scale the Urban Grower can be used for rooftop farms, community gardens, school gardens or even commercial farms.
How many plants can I grow?
An Urban Grower can hold 14 to 24 plants at once depending on the plant size. Each pot lid has four large holes and two small holes that can be utilised for planting.
How much water does my Urban Grower need?
The amount of watering will depend on the weather and how quickly that water is used up by the plants. In very warm weather we recommend watering each pot with 500ml of water a day (or 2 litres per tower). In colder weather watering can be done less frequently like every second or third day depending on the moisture of the coir and how thirsty the plants are that you have planted. Plants like tomatoes generally require more water as opposed to leafy greens like spinach or chard.
How much fertiliser do I need?
Fertiliser is provided with the Urban Grower kit. The fertiliser provided is a slow-release fertiliser and will last 6 to 9 months. Each pot requires 25g or 4 x 5ml spoons of fertiliser.
